He got one out of the garbage, and as I was trying to pull it out of
his mouth, he just kept swallowing, and the entire thing was gone. Do
I need to worry, or will he be able to digest it? Today, he has had
diarrhea.

I would take him to the vet if he swallowed it whole, it could cause serious damage.  I had a friend who gave his dog chicken bones   VERY BAD for any dog, a poultry bone may splinter and cause internal bleading. To a lesser degree a pork, or lamb bone may also splinter and cause damage.  If you want to give him a natural bone, a nice beef knuckle bone (well-boiled) is typically safe.  Then there's always rawhide and nylon bones too.
