Hi guys,

Does anyone have any advice on how to naturally stop a kakiriki laying eggs
? For the last few months she's laying nearly one every other day and this
cannot be healthy.
Also any advice on how to make her look a little less scrawny. Her feathers
are not in good condition and are falling out round her head and neck and
belly (she isn't pulling them) I think this is because she maybe isn't
getting enough calcium and vitamins with all this egg laying....
We put fruit and veg in her cage and vitamin and calcium drops in her water
(and have been doing so for months)

The only time she has stopped laying eggs and was when we went on holiday in
the summer and she moved in with my parents and 4 dogs ! she never laid one
egg and came back looking beautiful.

any tips or ideas for making her look more healthy and maybe for stopping he
laying eggs would be gratefully accepted.

thanks in advance,

Sass.

Have you tried cutting down the number of "daylight" hours she has?
If my finches have less than 10 hours of daylight in 24 hours (their
cage is covered at that point), their egg laying is greatly reduced.

This response is a bit late, but... The others' advice about removing the
shoe box is a good idea. But more importantly, I wonder if you are removing
the eggs? You should not remove them, just let her keep laying and
eventually, she will stop laying and then become bored of sitting on them.

The kakariki is a New Zealand native bird. New Zealand has been isolated for
a long time, and the birds are unique.
See what Google says about, there are many sites.
Here a permit is required to keep them, and suitable aviaries are needed for
such an active bird.
Surely you are not keeping her as a cagebird, like a budgie? What exercise
is she getting?

30pm every night now (in the spare room with a
blanket over the cage). Shoe box is removed, all the shredding materials
have been removed. Mirror has been removed from her cage. Diet has been
altered, less seeds and more fruit and veg.
We had one egg after I posted but I am hoping this was on the way anyway.
Since then no eggs but that has only been a few days, fingers crossed
however ! Thanks again for the advice !

Hi Peeps,

Thanks for all the advice.
She is going to bed at 8:30pm every night now (in the spare room with a
blanket over the cage). Shoe box is removed, all the shredding materials
have been removed. Mirror has been removed from her cage. Diet has been
altered, less seeds and more fruit and veg.
