I have a wonderful 9-year-old Somali cat named Rudy. He's a wonderful,
loving boy, except for the fact that he's been pooping outside his
litter box for many years. For awhile, it was only for a few weeks after
I'd been away, but then he stopped using the cat box for stool
completely. It bothered me, but as it was only on the vinyl floor in the
bathroom, it wasn't hard to clean.

Recently, he's begun going other places. The upstairs bath (with the
marble floor), a spare bedroom (now, I keep the door closed), even the
bathroom sink. He sometimes even pees on the floor, instead of in his box.

He doesn't seem to be ill, and I took him to the vet for a checkup and
she says he's fine. I don't remember any changes that would have made
him start doing this, either.

I've tried putting food dishes in the various places he goes, on the
theory that cats don't like to go to the bathroom near food. Not this
one - he couldn't care less. I've tried using the spray-on cat
deterrents, but he just moves somewhere else.

So far, I've just cleaned it up, but I'm really afraid he'll start doing
something I can't live with, like going on my bed or the furniture.

Does anyone have any ideas I might try?

Thanks,

.. Joann

Just curious Joann, when you took him to the vet for the checkup, did this
include blood tests?

No, it didn't. What do you suspect? I might think it was his health if
this hadn't been happening all along, though it's worse now.
