I don't have any houseplants at the moment. In the future I'd like
to create an aviary where my birds could fly about and enjoy
themselves. What houseplants would be safe for them and which types
should I avoid?

Right now I have two budgies but I might like to add cockatiels later
on. I doubt that I will ever be interested in the larger parrots, like
Grey Africans, but I might want to add parakeets at some point as well.

In regard to house plants, I will probably select ordinary varieties
like those you find anywhere. In particular, those that are hardy and
easy to take care of.

Are there plants that could be considered safe for any bird, or does
this question depend on the species of birds in particular?

Thanks,
Innominate

Not sure myself. But I just read that all budgies are parakeets, but
not all parakeets are budgies. I believe mine is a strictly a parakeet.

Darling budgie!! A budgie is one type of parakeet. There are many
different types of parakeets.
In this country we tend to call budgies parakeets, but technically
your bird is a budgie.

We never call budgies "parakeets" here, and use the term to describe a size
and general type of bird.

I've had her for almost five years and have never referred to her as a
budgie. Thanks for correcting me. I love this creature. She has the
most loving personality and is such a clown. I would be heartbroken if
I ever lost her.

budgie is short for Budgerigar. They are native to Australia... although you
don't see too many flying around in my area. They like grassy plains etc.
Your miss happy feather looks just like a female budgie I had called
"tubby".... She was hand raised, and would sleep upside down on you! She
slept in a sock for a LONG time after I got her. So gentle, kind and a
LOVELY bird.

As far as I know, budgies and parakeets are not the same, but they are
both members of the Parrot family.

Anyhow, back to my question: what house plants are safe for budgies and
other birds like cockatiels and parakeets? Safe for them to come in
contact with. Perhaps chew on.

Thanks,

Damn, you are dense.
You say you want to build an aviary for your budgies and maybe some
cockatiels and possibly add "parakeets" to it at some point in the future.

Why do you keep bringing up "parakeets" as if they are a species?
Anyhow, back to my question: what paint is safe for BMWs and
other vehicles like Nissans and cars?

Okay, so now that we've dealt with the troll(s).

If I want to let my budgie boys fly free in my house, are there any
particular house plants that I should avoid keeping?

My question, I now realize, has two parts:

1) What plants won't poison the budgies (or other small parrots) if
they should chew on them?

2) What plants are sturdy enough to withstand the assault the budgie
boys (or other birds) will subject them to?

The only serious answer to this question that I have received so far,
in this thread, is to speak with an Avian Vet. Sure, that's good, but
don't tell me that there aren't bird owners in this group who
already have experience with this issue.

Thanks,

You see there are many different kinds of parakeets. The birds listed
above are all parakeets, but not one of them could live in an aviary
with the budgies you have or 'tiels you may get or even any other bird
on the list. Then there's the Parakeet Auklet that isn't even any kind
of parrot at all. You have a bit of research that you need to do
regarding what a parakeet is and what birds are compatable with your
budgies or any other species you want in your planned aviary.

I provided 2 links for you. Did you see that post? If not, I'll
go back and repost them.

He doesn't want links. He wants to be spoon fed. He obviously can't
figure out how to use Google to search for the information himself.

I don't know why you think that--if the aviary is large enough and
properly suited, these birds can cohabitate. I have a friend with a mixed
aviary of sex-segregated cockatiels, budgies, grey cheeks and ring necks.
He's had them like this for years with an occasional squable, but never any
real problem. In fact, he's fostered ringnecks under cockatiels several
times.
