Well, week 3 and my red-bellied "Java" is now really enjoying his bath and lets me scratch his head and rides on the shoulder when I drive the riding lawnmower. (Not mowing, just driving) He is very calm and talking away. No morning screeches or evening screeches. I think I am in love with this little guy. Any way my question is> He seems to LOVE POPCORN! (No salt or butter) Anyone no if it is good or bad for him? When I bought him, the lady that I bought him from said he can eat what ever I eat. Just wondering I anyone knows from experence. Thanks Niki and Java

about this. We feed it to our birds. They love it. As with anything you don't want it to be a large part of their diet. Our Avian Vet uses it as a treat. When we had our first Macaw in for surgery they had used it (Pop Corn) to try to distract him from pulling the bandages off his foot. -- "Everything in excess! Most members of the parrot family love popcorn as do most poultry and wild birds. Unless it's severved to the exclusion of other more nutritious foods I can't imagine it being a problem. My birds get some popcorn a couple of times a month more as a treat but not as a regular food. The worst problem I have with popcorn is being swarmed by seven parrots when I have a bag of it in my hand.

Mine love the stuff... in moderation. Even better... get a fresh (or frozen) ear of corn, cut it in 2 inch slices. I usually make a small hole through the center of these round peices of the corn on the cob chunks, slide them onto a string or rope and then hang in cage or perch. My Eclectus would ignore the house burning down around him for a few minutes with fresh corn on the cob.

Everything in moderation. Dave [/quote] You come up with some good ones, but this one beats your comment about the diet of Hyacinth Macaws not being Palm nuts. Chocolate is poison to many animals. The problem is the Theobromine. It's not a drug, it's part of the plant they make chocolate from. The darker the chocolate the higher the amount it contains. It's what gives chocolate that "chocolate" flavor. Yes it will kill, how much it would take would depend on the bird, the type of chocolate, and the stupidity of the person willing to try to feed it to the bird. Now Avocado is open to debate. I have read some reports of people saying there was nothing wrong with it, and that birds could eat the meat of the avocado. The reports said they could find nothing in it harmful. One I read speculated that the problem, if there ever was one may have come from the seed or the skin. Since I do not feel like experimenting on my birds I don't offer them avocado or chocolate. -- "Everything in excess! To enjoy the flavor of life, take big bites. Moderation is for monks."
