Anyone know? He takes an interest in what I eat and wants to try a
piece of everything on my plate. I give him a few vegetable tidbits
from time to time but I am unsure about feeding him things like bacon,
chicken or sausage (which he tries to grab when he's out of his cage).
He even tries to steal food from my mouth (and has done since I got
him as baby - he's always been cocky) at times.

As budgerigars are herbivores by nature, I do not want to feed him
anything that may harm his digestive system or make him sick.

Your advice would be appreciated.

My budgies, one of which I've had for 9 years, eat everything and
anything that we do. They don't eat that much at a time, nor do they
eat off my plate every day. When they do fly over during a meal,
they can pick and choose what they want. I wouldn't feed them a
steady diet of bacon and ice cream, but if they want a nibble once in
awhile, it's not going to hurt anything. If you're providing them a
healthy, varied budgie diet, they're eating with you primarily to be
social. Relax and enjoy your buddy. Smile

dont be afraid to let your budgie try new things! basically, things
that are good for you are good for your budgie, but the same holds true
for things that are not so good for humans. its a blessing to have a
bird that is willing to munch on a variety of foods and not just a
dried seed diet (really not a staple for any bird) as it is a much
healthier alternative to vitamin supplements. try to stick to organic
and unprocessed foods as much as possible. a few my birds enjoy are:
cooked brown rice, boiled chicken, collards/parsely/chard (any of those
dark leafy greens), cooked eggs, frozen vegetable medleys (thawed), oat
meal... well you get the idea. ive even stumbled across a few bird
recipes. bird bread: prepare 1 package of jiffy corn bread as directed
on box, add 3 extra eggs (shell and all), dice and mix in any veggies
you may happen to have in the fridge (carrots, zuccini, etc), nuts and
berries (appropriate for size of bird), apple sauce or cooked sweet
potato, and bake as directed. any left overs can be wrapped and
frozen. there are only a few strict no-no's when it comes to bird diet:
caffeine (coffee, chocolate), avacadoes, foods high in sodium/processed
sugars, onions. i would also be concerned with some fishes due to the
mercury content.
